Ceramic coating vs wax vs sealant: what you are actually buying
Three products, three completely different jobs, and a price gap that mostly is not about the bottle. A plain-English comparison.
A wax costs twenty dollars. A ceramic coating costs a thousand. The bottle is not what changed. Here is where the money actually goes and how to pick.
Carnauba wax
A natural product that sits on top of the clear coat. It gives a warm, slightly soft glow that people genuinely prefer on some colours, particularly deep reds and dark blues.
- Lasts four to eight weeks realistically, less in hard sun
- Cheap, forgiving to apply, pleasant to work with
- Almost no chemical resistance, strips off with a strong soap
- The right answer for show cars and enthusiasts who enjoy the ritual
Synthetic sealant
A polymer that bonds more tightly than wax and behaves far better in real weather. This is the default protection on most of our detail packages.
- Lasts four to six months on a car parked outside
- Genuine chemical and UV resistance
- Sharper, more reflective look than wax rather than a warm one
- The right answer for leased vehicles and anyone on a two year ownership cycle
Ceramic coating
A silica-based liquid that cures into a hard, permanent-until-abraded layer that is chemically bonded to your clear coat rather than sitting on it.
- Two to seven years depending on the product and the preparation
- Strong hydrophobics, so dirt struggles to key in and mostly leaves with the rinse
- Real chemical resistance against bird lime, sap and fallout
- Adds hardness, which resists light marring but does not stop rock chips
Why the coating costs what it does
Because a coating locks in whatever is underneath it, permanently. Coat swirled paint and you have preserved swirled paint for five years. So the honest version of the service is a full correction first, and correction is a day or more of skilled labour.
The bottle is maybe a tenth of the invoice. You are buying the day and a half of preparation that decides whether it lasts five years or eight months.
Picking, quickly
- Keeping the car under two years, garaged: a sealant twice a year
- Keeping it two to four years, parked outside: sealant, or an entry coating if the paint is dark
- Keeping it four years or more: coat it, and correct it properly first
- You enjoy doing it yourself on a Sunday: wax, and ignore everything above
